- If the patient has dental insurance that covers orthodontics

- The area in which the patient lives and will be receiving treatment

For example, traditional metal braces tend to be the least expensive option, while clear braces or Invisalign clear aligner therapy may cost slightly more. Orthodontic treatment for children will also be a bit less expensive than adult treatment in most cases since teeth are able to be moved more quickly at a young age, and cases are usually less complicated. However, this will vary depending on the individual. Patients who have more severe or complex problems may experience longer treatment times which means more work for the orthodontist and more follow-up appointments.
Finally, each orthodontist will have their own pricing structure which will be based in part on where they’re located. In some cases, insurance policies will provide coverage for orthodontic treatment, but how much will depend on the individual patient and the treatment that’s required.

What is the average cost for braces?

Again, the total cost of braces will depend on the unique needs of each individual patient, along with everything we mentioned above.
Using dental insurance to cover orthodontic treatment
In some cases, dental insurance plans will cover orthodontic treatment, but the coverage rules and policies can be confusing. Our team has many years of experience working with insurance companies, and we’re committed to helping our patients receive the maximum coverage!
Each customized treatment plan is based upon the patient’s unique health needs and the professional judgment of Dr. Jim or Dr. MaryEvan. We’ll never recommend treatment based on whether or not that specific option is covered by insurance. Instead, our patients are presented with a plan that will best meet their unique smile needs.
Once a patient has seen Dr. Jim or Dr. MaryEvan for an initial consultation and received a diagnosis and treatment plan, those with dental insurance should check with their provider to see what they will and will not cover in the way of orthodontic treatment.
As a courtesy to our patients, we’re happy to help with insurance claims and paperwork. Co-payments or out of pocket expenses will be estimated before beginning treatment. Once treatment is complete and all insurance payments are received, we’ll reconcile the account. Patients will be responsible for any underpayment.
If insurance won’t cover treatment, can the cost be deducted?
If braces are determined to be medically necessary by your doctor, the dental health care costs associated with them may be tax-deductible. However, the cost must first exceed a certain amount before any deductions would be applied. Patients should keep records of all expenses associated with their braces treatment if they wish to deduct the costs, including co-pays and check-up visits.
Will Medicaid cover the cost of braces?
Treatment costs may be covered by Medicaid if the patient’s braces are deemed medically necessary by Dr. Jim or Dr. MaryEvan.
